Horse trainer Roger Varian is weighing up, giving the William Hill St Leger contender Defoe an outing in the Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury this coming Saturday. Defoe is entered in the final classic of the year at Doncaster next month, Varian sees the extended one-mile five-furlong race as the perfect stepping stone to Doncaster. Since Defoe returned to action, he has completed a hat-trick, the latest of them was a listed race at Hamilton.
Varian said: “Defoe is in good form. He worked well with Andrea (Atzeni) last Saturday morning. The St Leger is our big goal with him.
“We might think about running him in the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury on Saturday before that though.”
